Dog harness or collar: which should you use?
A plain comparison of collars, harnesses and leashes, and how to check the fit.
A collar is for ID and light walking
A collar is easy to put on and a good place for an ID tag. It suits dogs that walk calmly beside you. A leash clips on at the ring.
A harness spreads the pull
A harness sits across the chest and back instead of the neck, which many owners prefer for dogs that pull, for small dogs and for puppies still learning to walk on a leash.
Check the fit
Whichever you choose, you should be able to slide two fingers under the strap. It should be snug enough not to slip over the head, and loose enough not to rub. Recheck as your dog grows.
If you are unsure, a trainer or veterinarian can show you the right fit for your dog.
