Your dog's first brushing routine
A calm, short routine for new dog parents in a busy home.
Before you start
Pick a quiet time, after a walk, when your dog is relaxed.
Keep sessions to a few minutes at first and end while your dog is still comfortable.
Step by step
Let your dog sniff the brush. Brush gently in the direction the coat grows, one section at a time.
Use a comb to check for tangles. Ease knots out slowly from the root rather than pulling.
When to pause
If your dog pulls away, growls, or the skin looks red or sore, stop. Ask a veterinarian about skin or coat concerns; grooming tools are not a treatment.
